Further Information: Institutional guides inform the development of new content and e-Learning courses

Are procedures and processes defined for the development of new e-Learning courses?

An important part of your organisation wide guidelines, should be a description of your strategic approach to the development of new content and e-Learning courses. This will be based on:

  • a review of what you have already
  • an analysis of the training you want to deliver
  • a review of what is already out there that is fit for purpose
  • a description of how you want to deliver it
  • staff access to ICT

Without this there will be disconnected content and e-Learning resource development which is wasteful and confusing.

Checklist for developing new content and learning courses

Consider the following questions which need to be included in your institutional guide to help you develop new content and learning resources:

  • Where will I get the resources from? For example, from colleagues, commercial suppliers, government agencies, websites?
  • Who are the resources for? This is important. You don’t want masses of resources that are never used.
  • Where will the resources go? On the intranet or will they be free standing? Before you start spending, you should decide where your teachers and trainers would use and access the resources.
  • Who do the resources belong to? You need to check any intellectual property rights or copyright issues, especially if you want to reuse or repurpose them.
  • How will the resources be used? For example, as part of a blended learning or distance learning programme?
How much will the resources cost? Do they offer value for money? Can you justify buying them?
