Further Information: There is a clear process, that is understood and used, for evaluating nationally and locally available materials to meet a wide range of needs.
Why evaluate?
e-Learning resources that have been developed either nationally or locally, need to be evaluated against accepted quality and function standards and trialled with learners and those supporting e-Learning.
After using an e-Learning resource, evaluations should be carried out to assess whether it has helped or hindered the learners in achieving the resource’s learning objectives and also to flag up any problems or difficulties they may have had in using it. This process will help you to find out what improvements could be made to the resources and develop ideas for future resources.
Who to involve?
Learners: Through user testing and feedback
Trainers: Through user testing and feedback
Those involved in the commissioning process: eg SHA ETD leads, ETD cluster leads
What to ask?
Most e-Learning evaluation processes are in two parts.
- Looking at core teaching and learning principles
- Looking at core design principles.
It is extremely unlikely that any resources can be evaluated against all of the following criteria (taken from the Becta Quality Principles), but by using this process you will be able to establish whether or not the resource is achieving what you want it to.
Core Teaching and Learning Principles
- Inclusion and access
- Learner engagement
- Effective learning
- Assessment to support learning
- Robust summative assessment
- Innovative approaches
- Ease of use
- Match to the curriculum/scheme of work etc
Core design principles
- Digital learning resource design
- Robustness and support
- Human computer interaction
- Quality of assets
- Accessibility
- Interoperability
- Testing and verification
- Effective communication
For explanations of these criteria see the Becta Quality principles for digital learning resources.
