Further Information: Those involved in learning and development have the skills to develop e-Learning content to create an inclusive learning experience.

When developing content for learning and development organisations can choose to commission from external providers or develop content in-house. It is possible to create e-Learning content yourself in the same way as you would create hand-outs and worksheets.  e-Learning is a tool and content can take many forms such as

  • interactive PowerPoint
  • Word documents with drop down boxes
  • podcasts
  • spreadsheets
  • wikis or blogs
  • video
  • Developing in house

Developing content can be either adapting existing courses to include e-Learning or be the complete development of a whole new programme. To facilitate this the developer should be able to use tools to create e-Learning content.

For further information with regard to competencies for e-Learning Designers and Developers see "Competency Framework for e-Learning Designers and Developers".

In addition the skills, knowledge and understanding of learning styles, pedagogy, facilitating training, presentation skills and design are all key to ensuring that the content will enhance learning.

In addition, Connecting for Health have developed job descriptions with accompanying KSF profiles for trainers.

    E-Clubs and Support Groups

Another alternative is to pool together resources across organisations or departments. Members may be able to pick up and practice new skills from each other and practice them in a supportive environment.

    Subject Specific Experts

Developers will not necessarily be experts in the subject area of the package being developed.   In this case the developer should always work closely with subject specific experts at the earliest stage to ensure clear understanding of the learning outcomes required.   The working relationship should continue from initiation through design, delivery and evaluation of the product. The Core Learning Unit, for example, when developing a new programme set up Expert Reference Groups containing subject experts, e-Learning experts and education experts who input to the development at all stages.
