Further Information: Leaders are aware of the views and attitudes of colleagues towards e-Learning.

What views and attitudes?

You need to know who is supportive and who needs more time and effort spent on them to convince them of the benefits of e-Learning.

Where colleagues are supportive, can this support be divided into the categories shown below?

  • pedagogical (concerned with learning)
  • technical (concerned with the computers and the networks)
  • creative (concerned with the development of engaging content).

Having divided the views and attitudes you should now be able to identify areas where you have appropriate levels of support and other areas where support is not so strong.

You need to establish why some colleagues are not so positive about e-Learning. There could be a number of reasons for this.

  • Have they had a previous bad experience of e-Learning?
  • Have they ever experienced e-Learning or just heard about other people’s experiences?
  • Do they think that e-Learning will not be cost effective?

Additionally you need to checkout that their views are not clouded by misconceptions or unrealistic expectations of e-Learning. Many people see e-Learning as a cheap method of delivering learning and think that they can reduce the size of the training department without realising that the learning still requires support. These ideas need to be challenged and readdressed.

How does this knowledge help you?

Once you have a clear understanding of the views and attitudes of colleagues towards e-Learning this information can be used to help you plan.

If you divide the views and attitudes into the three categories of pedagogical, technical and creative you should be able to identify areas where you have appropriate levels of support and other areas where support is not so strong. This will allow you to plan where you need to target your efforts to get other colleagues on board.

Could the colleagues with positive views of e-Learning become e-Learning champions for their department or work group?

Look at the sections in the Toolkit on e-Champions and Managing Change.

Where more work is needed to be done to get colleagues on board could you use the colleagues with positive views to help with this work?
